6MS Eye Piece 3 Nov 2011 – Would you give a Jelly Bean for an Ice Cream Sandwich?

In today’s Technology Spot, I thought it would be worth a look at the new Android Operating system – Ice Cream Sandwich – that Google unveiled on 18th October 2011.

There is an excellent summary of it on CNET which covers the main new features under the title “Ice Cream Sandwich first impressions: a Bold New Android” written by Jessica Dolcourt and Nicole Lee.

For those of you who need reminding and who enjoy geeky names, Jessica has reviewed the history and capabilities of the Android operating system in an article entitled “The Android era: From G1 to Ice Cream Sandwich (and beyond)” also on CNET.  The Android Team must be having a lot of fun inventing wacky names: G1 (Android 1.0), 1.5 – Cupcake, 1.6 Donut – 2.0 Eclair – 2.1 Eclair second helping – 2.2 Froyo (lost me there!) – 2.3 Gingerbread – 3.0 Honeycomb – 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  What ever they are doing must be playing havoc with their cholesterol!

In the two articles you get a good summary of the new features which may help you to decide when you want to consider a handset upgrade.   There is a suggestion that many of these features arise from the “standing on the shoulders of giants” syndrome – i.e. for some inexplicable reason they are familiar to features found on other operating systems.  Strange coincidence that.  Then again, maybe that is why everyone is suing everyone else in the smartphone handset space.

The last point is that there is a suggestion that the next generation is going to be called Jelly Bean.  Me?  I think after all those calories I’d be ready for a Cappuccino!
