Need Some Help with your Online Courses Business?
So whats the problem? What is wrong with your Udemy course? You’ve made this brilliant Udemy course and its not selling! You cannot get students to pay for it – free students are ten a penny – well actually they are not even that! Have you published your course and sunk without trace? Is your Udemy course marketing ineffective?
What is the Problem with your Udemy Course?
Today you cannot just push the publish button and expect it all to happen. The sales will NOT just roll in! There is simply too much competition. You need to know what to do with your Udemy course after you hit the publish button!
I had this Problem too with my Udemy Course!
When I created my first course, it did really well at first. I was new to the platform and I think Udemy tries hard to support its new instructors. Well it seemed to be the case 18 months ago. But after that, well, it all rather faded out. I could not understand why. So, I decided to do something about it. I started studying to find out why my Udemy course was not getting any sales and what I could do about it!
Guess What Happened Next?
I started getting asked by other instructors what I was doing, how I was doing it and why I was doing what I was doing! I was devising and testing strategies to increase sales of my Udemy course and this was of great interest to other instructors! They say “listen to your audience. So I started offering help and advice when people asked how to improve their sales and now I have decided to formalise my Coaching Programme!
How Can I Help?
In the process of my research, I devised a Six Step process for mastering Udemy! Well, the Six Minute Strategist would not do anything else. These six stages cover the whole lifecycle of creating and profiting from a Udemy course. The six steps are:
- Planning your Udemy course
- Producing the course
- Publishing
- Proof – Gaining the Social Proof to encourage sales and convince Udemy to move your course up the page rankings
- Promoting your Udemy Course – this is the bit most instructors forget about
- Platforms – finding other places to share your content and get paid more than once for the same course!
By the way, there is a “Secret Seventh Step” – but I can’t tell you about that now Shhhhhh, you will have to join the programme but it is without doubt the most valuable step of all!
Ask Yourself Some Questions about your Udemy Course?
1. Planning
Approach your planning phase with strategic intent.
- Who are your Audience?
- Who are your Competitors?
- What problem are you solving?
- How are you going to differentiate your course?
- What structure and course length is appropriate?
- What media and materials are you going to provide?
2. Producing
- Have you created an online video course before? Well the first time is the hardest. It is vital to ensure that your production standards are as high as can be, particularly audio.
- Do you have the right equipment and software.
- Have you thought through your deliver style and presentation?
- Have you got your lighting right?
- What software tools are you going to employ?
- Do your technical skills meet the high publishing standards of Udemy?
3. Publishing
This is all about Strategy.
- Do you have a launch plan?
- Are you going to share your course with friends and family?
- Where are you going to promote your course.
- What are you doing initially with coupons and discounts?
- How are you going to get those critical early ratings and reviews?
It doesn’t stop when you hit the publish button
4. Proof
Social Proof is critical to both Udemy and your potential students.
- How are you going to maximise both free and paid enrolments of your course. Udemy looks at them differently.
- Do you have a strategy for rapidly ramping up enrolments to affirm the quality of your course to new students?
- How will this affect your ranking on Udemy’s market place pages?
- 5. Promoting
This is where the hard work really starts! What are your on-going marketing strategies. Do you know where your audience hangs out? How are you going to reach them? Is there an easy way to do this or are you just going to slog at it? What processes and systems do you have in place to make life easier? How are you going to measure what is working?
6. Platforms
Can you monetise your courses in other places than Udemy? The online education market is still in its infancy but already there are many platforms out there.
- Which are worth signing up to?
- Which are a waste of your time?
- What can you add to your monthly income?

This is what one Student had to say…
“Just wanted to say that John Colley has a LOT to offer. A lot indeed. He gave me a fantastic review on what I need to do differently to make my course more successful, and everything he said made good sense, and he wasn’t at all hyping either himself or the suggestions he was giving.” Charlie B.
