I first found out about Udemy just over two years ago and I blame Chris Ducker!

If it had not been for Chris, I would not now be suffering from this addiction, which I understand is completely incurable!  Discovering how easy it is to transform knowledge and expertise into online courses has been a real game changer for me and it can be for you as well!

I want to share my story with you but at the same time I want to help you to discover how you can take your expertise and create long term value; both for you and your students.

This is where the rubber really meets the road!  This is where you discover the source of the fountain of youth – well, OK, I am exaggerating a little, but creating online video courses to educate the world and getting paid for it is probably the next best thing.

There are six phases – well there would be from the Six Minute Strategist – and I am going to take you through them in detail, one by one.

The six phases are:

  1. Plan
  2. Produce
  3. Publish
  4. Proof
  5. Promote
  6. Platforms

Lets take a quick look at each of them.

Plan – this is almost certainly the most daunting phase as it can be difficult to get started but I really want you to engage in this phase closely.  The time you spend planning your courses – and yes, I do mean plural – will save you hours and hours later on.  I want you to only produce one course at a time but I want you to plan your portfolio from the outset.

Produce – this is all about getting to grips with the nitty-gritty of the hardware and software.  Again, I do not want you to be put off by this challenge.  Think of it as like riding a bike. Once done, never forgotten.  So spend some time but only a little money getting this right.  And I show you how to do this.

Publish – once the course is produced, I am afraid that your work is less than half done.  You will need to work hard getting your course out to your prospective audience and getting them to enrol.  Once you understand how you can systematise this, then it becomes very much more straight forward.

Proof – this is a little phase of my own creation but an important once.  Online today, your prospective students will want to enrol in your course only after they have satisfied themselves that the course is the right one for them and this includes getting confirmation from other students that the course will deliver on its promises.  Don’t skip this step!

Promote – this really is the eighty percent of the 80:20 rule.  Promotion of your course is an ongoing and unavoidable challenge. The rules are changing all the time and you have to adapt to the way the game is played – or your sales will suffer.  Be prepared to keep up to date and work hard at this.

Platforms – finally I want to take you beyond Udemy and show you how you can make online video courses the centre of your online business.  It can become a complex ecosystem but it is one which can be scaled and become easy to maintain.

Once I had been told about Udemy, I dived right in.  I worked through the great free resources that Udemy made available at that time and had created my first course within a month. That course alone has earned me over $10,000!  I have not stopped since then. I now have 19 courses published and loads of ideas for more and more courses – there just are not enough hours in the day.  I did warn you it is an addiction!
